RESPs in Whitby: what local families should actually do

Whitby and Brooklin families tend to be saving for two or three children at once — which makes the family RESP structure, not the contribution amount, the decision that matters.

Short answer

How much should a Whitby family put into an RESP?

For most Whitby households the right structure is a single family RESP covering all siblings rather than separate individual plans. One account, one fee schedule, and if one child skips post-secondary the balance and (within limits) the grant can move to a sibling instead of being wound down. The contribution target remains $2,500 per child per year for the full $500 CESG.

Family plan or individual plans?

A family plan lets you name multiple beneficiaries related to you by blood or adoption. Growth is pooled and Educational Assistance Payments can be directed to whichever child is actually enrolled, subject to the $7,200 grant cap per child.

The practical benefit shows up around age 18. If your eldest goes into an apprenticeship at Durham College's Whitby skilled trades campus and needs $18,000 while your youngest heads to a five-year program, a family plan reallocates without collapsing anything.

  • Track each child's grant separately even inside a family plan — the $7,200 cap is per beneficiary.
  • Contribution room is also per child: $50,000 each, not $50,000 per plan.
  • Individual plans still make sense when children have very different time horizons or funding sources.

The skilled trades path is a qualifying program

Durham College's Whitby campus is one of the largest skilled trades training centres east of Toronto. Parents frequently assume an apprenticeship route means the RESP is wasted. It is not — registered apprenticeship and trade programs at designated institutions qualify for Educational Assistance Payments.

Given how many of our clients own trade businesses across Durham, this comes up constantly. The plan does not need to change because the path did.

Frequently asked questions

Can one RESP cover three children in Whitby?
Yes — a family RESP can name all siblings related to you by blood or adoption. Contribution room ($50,000) and CESG ($7,200) still apply per child, but the investments, fees and paperwork are consolidated into one account.
Do I have to live in Whitby to work with a local RESP advisor?
No. We meet families across Durham, Northumberland, Quinte and the Kawarthas in person at our Oshawa office or by video. The RESP rules are federal — what changes locally is the cost of the programs your child is likely to attend and whether they will live at home.
How much should a family contribute each year?
$2,500 per child per year captures the full $500 Canada Education Savings Grant. That is the target for most families. Contributing more in a single year does not increase the grant, it just uses up the $50,000 lifetime limit faster.
Can you move an existing RESP from my bank?
Yes. A direct plan-to-plan transfer preserves the CESG as long as the beneficiary stays the same or is an eligible sibling. We handle the forms; the grant is never withdrawn and re-deposited.
